Enable’s tale is not simply one of trophies and prize money. There were plenty of both. It is also the story of a mare who blended modern Thoroughbred breeding with the drama, setbacks, and triumphs of the racecourse.

Background and Pedigree

Few horses arrive with a pedigree as strong as Enable. Foaled on 12 February 2014, she was bred at Juddmonte Farms, the operation of Prince Khalid Abdullah.

Juddmonte has long been home to some of the best Thoroughbreds in the world. Before Enable had set hoof on a track, she carried the weight of generations on her shoulders.

Her sire, Nathaniel, had been a top-class racehorse, winning the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Eclipse.

Nathaniel himself was a son of Galileo, which tied Enable directly to Sadler’s Wells and Northern Dancer, two of the most influential names in modern breeding.

Enable’s dam, Concentric, had shown some ability in France but her true gift was as a broodmare. She produced several good performers, including Flintshire, though nothing on the level of Enable.

On paper, Enable’s inbreeding to Sadler’s Wells and Northern Dancer suggested stamina and quality. In practice, it delivered one of the finest middle-distance mares of all time.

Training and Early Races

Enable joined John Gosden at Clarehaven Stables in Newmarket. Gosden’s patience and sharp eye would prove crucial throughout her career. She was a big, scopey filly who needed time to mature.

Her only juvenile start came at Newcastle in late 2016, where she won a maiden in workmanlike fashion.

The following season she began to reveal her true ability. After finishing third on her reappearance, she lined up in the Cheshire Oaks.

There she swept past rivals with ease. Frankie Dettori, who would become inseparable from her story, later said her turn of foot “takes your breath away.” The partnership between mare and jockey would go on to define many of racing’s greatest moments.

Major Racing Wins and Highlights

The summer of 2017 saw Enable dominate. She took the Epsom Oaks in driving rain, proving her balance and stamina.

She quickly added the Irish Oaks before stepping out of her own division to beat older colts in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot. That win showed she was not only the best filly of her generation but the best middle-distance horse in training.

Her greatest moment that year came in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Chantilly. She stormed home to become the first British-trained filly to win the Arc in 14 years.

In 2018, injury delayed her return until September. She announced her comeback by winning the September Stakes, then produced a thrilling second Arc victory, this time outbattling Sea of Class.

Weeks later she crossed the Atlantic to Churchill Downs, where she won the Breeders’ Cup Turf. No horse had ever completed the Arc–Breeders’ Cup double before.

Enable kept delivering in 2019. She won the Eclipse Stakes, another King George after a titanic battle with Crystal Ocean, and the Yorkshire Oaks for a third time.

Her attempt at a historic third Arc ended with defeat to Waldgeist, but her performance lost nothing in courage.

Her final season in 2020 brought yet another King George, a record-breaking third. At Longchamp, she bowed out in her final attempt at the Arc.

By the end she had run 19 times, winning 15 races, including 11 Group 1s, and earning over £10.7 million. She defeated more than 20 individual Group 1 winners and stood among the very highest-rated fillies in British racing.

Ongoing Legacy in Racing

Enable’s story extends beyond numbers on a page. She rekindled romance in racing. The sight of Juddmonte silks, Dettori’s flying dismounts, and Gosden’s calm presence reminded fans that racing at its best is part theatre and part test of stamina.

Her longevity gave the sport a focal point. Fans followed her across seasons and across countries.

She was not retired after one great year. Instead she kept coming back, kept taking on the best, and usually winning. That built a bond between horse and public rarely seen in modern Flat racing.

Those closest to her speak with affection. Gosden described her as “the filly of a lifetime.” Dettori admitted she was “one of the best friends” of his career. For once, his words sounded less like theatre and more like genuine emotion.

Now retired as a broodmare at Juddmonte, Enable’s next chapter will be written through her foals. In time her sons and daughters will appear at Derby and Oaks trials. When they do, there will be a familiar murmur in the parade ring: “Pedigree tells.”

Enable’s place in racing is secure. Her record is written in gold, not only in the form books but in the memories of those who cheered her on. She was a champion in numbers and in spirit, loved by casual fans and hardened racegoers alike.
