Heads You Lose

Whiskey Chaser travelled north of the border for his 12th race under rules. I was unable to make it to Musselburgh as the race was on the same day as my mothers birthday, if you follow his blog you’ll know I don’t have much luck when it comes to being available for Whiskey’s races.

Despite the distance, a number of our syndicate made the trip and were duly rewarded with a fine effort by Whiskey Chaser and the McCain team.

After a poor run in his previous outing I hoped he would give a better account of himself in Scotland. The 13:40 William Hill – Bet And Watch Handicap Chase was the race and a field of eight runners assembled to take on the 2m 7f course. Vision De La Vie was the pre-race favourite and support was also shown for Oil Burner and Proud Gamble. Whiskey Chaser was available at 8/1 on-course and I managed to get 12/1 on the Betfair exchange, mistakenly I’d placed my win bet three times! I took that to be a good omen and I was already spending my winnings when the starter got them underway.

The race unfolded in normal fashion for our horse, he was near the front and jumping for fun. He continued to run well and two out from home it looked like he was on course for his second career win. However, Proud Gamble had other ideas and slowly he began to gain ground on Whiskey Chaser. It was a tense run-in to the post with Proud Gambler eventually beating Whiskey Chaser by a head.

In many ways it’s disappointing to lose by a head, but on the upside it was a great run from Whiskey Chaser. The team think he’ll be back racing in a couple of weeks and hopefully he can go one better.
